The official foundation of Australia's national capital took place on 12 March 1913 when Lady Denman, the wife of the then Governor-General, stood upon the newly-laid Foundation Stones and announced that the name would be Canberra.

The site had been selected in 1908 as a compromise between rivals Sydney and Melbourne. Following an international competition for the design of the city, plans by architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin were selected. Canberra is home to some of Australia's most important buildings and national institutions.
